Sun, Salt & Chlorine: How to Save Your Hair Before Summer Wrecks It

If your hair feels like straw at the end of August, you're not imagining it. Summer is genuinely one of the harshest seasons for your hair. Most of the damage is totally preventable.

I love summer. I love the pool, the lake, the beach trips. I also spend a significant portion of August helping clients repair the damage those things quietly did to their hair over the previous two months. So let's talk about it honestly — what's actually happening, and what we can do.

The Summer Damage Trio

UV Exposure

The sun breaks down the melanin in your hair (that's the color) and also oxidizes the proteins in the hair shaft itself. This is why blonde hair goes brassy, brunette hair goes warm and orange-toned, and everyone's ends start to feel dryer and more porous as summer goes on. Your hair doesn't have a repair mechanism the way your skin does — it can't heal. So damage that builds up over a summer has to be cut off or treated professionally.

Chlorine

Chlorine strips the natural oils from your hair and — here's the part people don't realize — actually binds to the proteins inside the hair shaft, causing structural damage over time. Color-treated hair is especially vulnerable because the cuticle is already open and ready to absorb whatever comes its way. One swim session isn't a crisis. A summer of daily swims without protection? That's a full-on repair situation by September.

Salt Water

Salt is hydroscopic, meaning it pulls moisture out of whatever it's touching. Spend a week at the beach and your hair can become genuinely dehydrated at a structural level. The "beach wave" texture you get? That's partly dryness and swelling of the hair shaft. Beautiful in the moment, damaging over time.

Prevention That Actually Works

  • Wet your hair with clean water before entering the pool or ocean — saturated hair can't absorb as much chlorine or salt

  • Use a leave-in conditioner or hair oil before sun exposure as a lightweight shield

  • Wear a hat or UV-protective hair product if you're outside for extended periods

  • Rinse your hair within 30 minutes of leaving the pool or ocean

  • Deep condition at least once a week throughout the summer, not just when things feel bad

The End-of-Summer Repair Plan

August is actually one of my favorite appointment months, because this is where we get to do real work. Most clients coming in after a summer of outdoor activity need some combination of the following: a trim to remove the worst of the mechanical damage, a bond-building or protein treatment to restore structural integrity, and often a color refresh because UV exposure has done a number on their tone.

My honest recommendation:

If your hair went through a real summer — pools, beach, sun, heat styling to survive the frizz — book a service appointment with an add-on (ex. Restoration Conditioning Treatment or Nourishing Hair Mask) in August or September. A targeted treatment combined with a toning gloss can genuinely transform how your hair looks and feels going into fall. Don't wait until it's completely broken. Repair is faster and cheaper than you think.

Fall is coming — and I want your hair to be ready for it. The rich, cozy color season is so much more beautiful on healthy hair. Let's get you there.
